Chukotka, the unknown country on the Bering Strait, lies in the far east of Russia, directly on the date line. This is where the day begins! Further East lies Alaska, which at the same time is still yesterday.
Until recently, only a few coastal towns of Chukotka were open for cruise tourism. We want to explore the interior of the country, visit the Chukchi, the nomads of the Arctic and the Eskimos of Asia.
This is an unforgettable trip. It leads through enchanting landscapes and offers an almost ideal mixture of rare nature and cultural experiences, as well as an incomparable adventure.

We start early to our big expedition. with an all-terrain vehicle, the so-called "Trekol". The trip leads first through a snow-covered tundra to the Eskimo settlement Uelkal at the edge of the Bering Sea. Depending on the quality of the snow, this trip can take up to 10 hours (180 km). We will stop again and again to warm up and take pictures and have lunch on the way.
Late afternoon arrival in Uelkal. We are welcomed by the local culture club, informed about the place and its people.
Dinner and overnight in the lounge of the local club.

In the afternoon we will arrive in Egvekinot. We will move into holiday bungalows, get some orientation in the settlement and visit the museum with interesting exhibits on ethnography, geology and the history of Egvekinot. The museum staff informs us about interesting political facts, e.g. the importance of the place during the Second World War, as well as about the later GULAGs and their prisoners.

We drive approx. 90 kilometres on a road built by GULAG prisoners to the village of Amguema, the central settlement of the reindeer chukchi. We visit a reindeer brigade and get to know the people of the tundra, spend the evening with them at the campfire and spend the night in a Yaranga, the traditional tent of the locals.
It is also possible to return to Amguema and visit the local folklore and dance group performance in the evening.
7 Day:
We continue the 190 km long route to Vankarem. On the way we stop at the Vostochny gold mine, have lunch. We spend this day in an absolutely untouched, almost endless landscape, driving without road over open terrain.
In Vankarem we are accommodated with the locals or in the polar station. We visit the town and the troposphere station, hike to the polar ocean, meet the local Chukchi and Inuit in the club in the evening.
8. - 10. Day:
Three days from Vankarem we can explore the Arctic Sea coast. With a little luck we will observe polar bears from a safe distance. The Chukchian guide accompanying us comes from a hunter family and is a member of a bear patrol of the WWF. He will make us familiar with the habits of the polar bears in detail. He will also be able to introduce us to the Eskimo way of life.
If the weather permits, we accompany a hunter to the seal hunt or to the walrus gatherings.
